On your cruise you can admire Walvis Bay, which, thanks to its rich marine life, is one of the places of most outstanding natural beauty in Namibia. Its gourmet delights are not to be missed either.

Before leaving the port you have to eat homegrown Walvis Bay oysters in one of the many restaurants that have sprung up in recent years. Today, maybe it’s harder to see whales in these waters but the highlight of Walvis Bay (aka Whales Bay) is still its natural lagoon with its abundance of seabirds, including flamingos and pelicans, which are joined every year by thousands of migratory birds.
As this is an area of outstanding natural beauty, there are many options for spending your time away from the ship. Due north of Walvis Bay along a coast road, the Atlantic harbour town of Swakopmund is just waiting to be discovered on an MSC South Africa excursion.

Offering a vivid reminder of Namibia’s colonial past, the older architecture is Germanic in style, German is widely spoken and the restaurants delight in serving bratwurst. There’s even an annual Oktoberfest, a jolly knees-up featuring locally brewed lager and Bavarian-style bands in lederhosen. Swakopmund is a safari and backpacker hub with some great shops selling souvenirs including beautiful, locally made jewellery, crafts and curios.

This is also Namibia’s extreme sports capital, with several operators offering quad-biking, dune buggy racing and sandboarding. Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are the southern point of the Skeleton Coast where, on nature trails across the sands and gravel plains, you can observe ancient desert-adapted plant species such as welwitschia (an endemic, trunkless tree which sags raggedly on the ground and can live for over 2500 years), lithops and delicate lichens.
During your cruise to Southern Africa, you will be surprised to discover the city of Lüderitz, along the Namibian coast. It will seem like someone had teleported a typical German town from early 20th century Europe to Africa.

The view of the barren profile of the Huns Mountains behind the town’s brightly or delicately coloured houses and the large amounts of sand on its streets produces a strange feeling. Once disembarked from your cruise ship, the obvious point from which to begin a land tour is the small Felsenkirche (1912), a Lutheran house of worship located close to the imposing Goerke Haus, a prestigious residence dating to 1910 designed by the architect Otto Ertl.

Today, it belongs to a mining company. German colonists were drawn to Namibia for its diamonds, which are also responsible for the city’s a railway station (now closed), a post office complete with a clock tower and commercial buildings such as the Krabbenhoft und Lampe. In Lüderitz, you will be able to visit the town and linger in the seaside locales overlooking the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the fishing boats sheltering in the small port, or go on one of the excursion inland.

Just ten kilometres from Lüderitz, there is a ghost town: Kolmanskop. If Lüderitz seemed odd to you, nothing will surprise you more than this group of buildings reclaimed by the desert. Everything is surreal, starting with the sign bearing the name of this town without inhabitants. It is an ideal setting for dramatic photo shoots or apocalyptic films.

Before being abandoned over fifty years ago, this population centre, which was active during the Namibian diamond rush, was bigger than Lüderitz itself. The houses of Kolmanskop, now overrun by dunes, have become a tourist attraction that will make your cruise unforgettable.

On Board | Combining spacious, elegant interiors with the variety for which our Musica Class is renowned, MSC Orchestra promises your dream cruise  includes spacious staterooms and suites; superb Body and Mind Spa, with pampering Turkish baths, saunas and a myriad of magical massages. Active types have a Sports Centre with Gym, 5 stunning pools and even a jogging track. MSC Orchestra also takes you on an exciting culinary journey, ranging from the Shanghai Chinese Restaurant with authentic Dim Sum specialties to the Four Seasons gourmet Italian dining experience and La Piazzetta, where you can discover the finest pizza outside Naples. The designer venues on this ecological ship make every moment a special occasion, whether dancing to the live music in the leopard-style Savannah Bar, tempting lady luck in the Palm Beach Casino or catching a spectacular show in the equally spectacular Covent Garden Theatre. Kids can go wild to their heart’s content in the Jungle Adventure playroom, while teens get their own Teen’s Club. Whatever your age and dreams, you can be sure they’ll come true for you, your friends and family on a cruise like no other with MSC Orchestra.
